2019-20 Women's Basketball Season Outlook

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team improved to 15-12 in 2018-19, finishing with a 10-6 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), good enough for the #5 seed in the conference tournament. After upsetting the #4 Roger Williams Hawks in the quarterfinal round, the Colonels fell in a close semifinal contest on the road against the #1 seed, Endicott. After improving their record in each of the past two seasons, the Colonels look to keep building with a young squad this season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Captains Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) and Amanda Leal (Tyngsboro, Mass.) will be leading a very young and talented squad this season. Coote is eager to get back on the court after missing most of last season with an injury. Leal is looking to improve on an excellent freshman year where she started in all 27 games and collected a CCC Rookie of the Week honor. Both have valuable playing experience that will help lead this team this year.

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS

Alexa Galluci (North Stonington, Conn.) and Ellie Holler (Hingham, Mass.), who are also two of our captains this year, will provide valuable leadership to this young team.

TOP NEWCOMERS

Curry has a very talented and deep recruiting class, starting with Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.), a two-time state champion with "Archies" (Archbishop Williams) and a tenacious defender. Katie and Kirsten Smith from East Bridgewater, Mass. are quick on both ends of the court. These two will be double-trouble against any backcourt they face. Both were named to the Brockton Enterprise All-Scholastic Team. Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) helped her team reach the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Semifinal round. She has an exceptional first step and drives to the hoop relentlessly. Kristyanna is also an Enterprise All-Star. Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) from Whitman-Hanson has all the tools to excel at the collegiate level. Dunn can shoot, can defend, and has good court vision. Kathryn was an Enterprise All-Scholastic pick, as well as being a two-time Patriot League All-Star. Jessica Brundage (Abington, Mass.) will give us some needed presence in the middle with a knack for getting blocks and altering shots. She was also instrumental in helping Abington get to the South Sectional Semifinal. Savannah Galluci (North Stonington, Conn.) from Wheeler High School was injured in the beginning of the season, but had proven herself enough to become the team's ECC Scholar-Athlete. For her size (5-4), she is an over-achiever on the inside. Angeliki Maniatis (Watertown, Mass.) from Arlington Catholic is a very strong athletic player that we think will be able to contribute from the wing position. Lillian "Lil" Gray (Brooksville, Maine) from Deer Isle-Stonington was a Penobscott Valley First-Team All-Conference selection her junior and senior years and added an All-Scholastic selection and Maine McDonalds All-Star selection her senior year. Gray is an excellent shooting guard who will be depended on this season. Rounding out the newcomers is Caroline Hurlburt (Falls Village, Conn.) from Housatonic Valley Regional, who helped her team finish first in their conference and garnered First-Team Berkshire League All-Conference honors. We are hoping Caroline can add help controlling the boards.

EXPECTATIONS FOR THE SEASON

We are hoping to improve on last year's results; going 15-12 with a first round win the postseason. This year's squad is young and very talented with a strong passion for the game and a willingness to learn. We expect to continually improve throughout the season. This year's team will make a strong run towards the end of our season and into the CCC tournament.

The Colonels open the 2019-20 campaign on Friday, November 8 at home against Saint Joseph's (Maine) in their annual Tip-Off Tournament. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
