Women's Basketball Chosen Fifth in CCC Preseason Coaches' Poll
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team has been chosen fifth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on Thursday.
The Colonels returns six student-athletes from last season, highlighted by sophomore Amanda Leal (Tyngsboro, Mass.). Leal is the Curry's top returning leading scorer, tallying 9.5 points per game last season. The Colonels also welcome back sophomore Ellie Holler (Hingham, Mass.), junior Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.), and seniors Caroline Kilduff (Rockland, Mass.), Alexa Galluci (North Stonington, Conn.), and Karina Murcia (Culver City, Calif.). Sixteenth-year head coach Fran Elms brought in 11 newcomers as the Colonels will look to improve upon last season that saw them advance to the CCC Tournament Semifinals.
Defending CCC Tournament Champions Western New England University landed in the top spot in the poll with 75 points and four first-place votes. Endicott places in second with 70 points and three first-place votes. The final two first-place votes were awarded to the University of New England, who finished with 69 points. Roger Williams (56) and Curry (39) close out the top five in the rankings.
Gordon (34), Salve Regina (33), Nichols (19), and Wentworth (10) close out the poll in spots six through nine.
The Colonels open the 2019-20 season at home as they host Saint Joseph's (Maine) at 7:30 p.m. in its annual Tip-Off Tournament.
