Women's Basketball Outlasted By UNE, 56-45

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team dropped a 56-45 decision at home to the visiting University of New England on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference play at Katz Gymnasium.

Sam McDonald (Lebanon, N.H.) led the guests with 14 points as the Nor'easters rebounded from a loss on Saturday to improve to 11-3 overall with a 7-1 mark in the CCC. McDonald went 6-for-11 from the floor, including 1-for-3 from three-point range and 1-for-1 at the free throw line. Kristie McNall (Wakefield, Mass.) added 11 points while also tallying a team-high 12 rebounds.

Curry (9-7, 5-4 CCC) was led by Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.), who finished with 14 points in 32 minutes. She shot 4-for-10 from the floor and also added a team-high seven rebounds. Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) joined Irwin in double-figures, chipping in 11 points and seven boards.  

UNE held Curry to 30-percent shooting (17-for-56) for the game and held a 44-37 rebounding advantage. Trailing 17-13 after the first quarter and 32-27 at halftime, the Nor'easters took control of the game in the third, outscoring the home team 20-9 in the stanza to build a 47-41 going into the final quarter of play.

The deficit for the Colonels reached as many as 11 before the end of the final quarter as the University of New England captured the contest by an 11-point margin, 56-45

UNE committed 19 turnovers in the game while forcing Curry into 20.

Curry will next play Gordon at home on Saturday, January 20 at 1:00 p.m. UNE returns to action on Saturday as they are set to host Endicott at 1:00 p.m.
