Women's Basketball Topped by Maine Maritime in Curry College Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game, 64-44

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team dropped a 64-44 contest to Maine Maritime Academy in the championship game of the Curry College Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners improve to 2-1 while the Colonels fall to 2-1.

Maine Maritime had one player score in double figures led by 24 points from Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.).  Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) and Emily Melick (Sudbury, Mass.) finished with nine and six points, respectively, as the Mariners shot 43.6 percent from the field and forced 15 Curry turnovers. Felix and Ogden combined for 21 rebounds and each recorded solid outings as Maine Maritime held a 53-36 advantage on the glass.

Curry shot just 25.4 percent for the game and went 1-for-25 from beyond the arc. Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) paced the home team with 13 points in 30 minutes. Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) was close to joining Irwin in double figures with nine points and six rebounds. Caroline Kilduff (Rockland, Mass.) led the scoring off the bench as the sophomore forward scored seven.

The Colonels only trailed 16-15 after the first quarter but the Mariners went on to outscore Curry by six in the second. Felix scored a lay-up with 6:03 left in the half to put the visitors up by 22-21 and then Ogden knocked down a three with 3:35 remaining to increase the lead to four (25-21). The deficit for the Colonels would reach as many as seven before halftime as Felix hit a lay-up with 16 seconds left to put the score at 32-25 going into the break.

Maine Maritime started to pull away in the second half as they outscored Curry 13-7 in the third quarter. The lead reached double digits when Felix converted a layup with 4:24 left to make the score 40-29. The deficit would climb to as many as 15 before the end of the stanza when Felix hit another lay-up. The Colonels were able to close the deficit to 13 heading into the final quarter of action.

The Mariners used another strong quarter to pull away from the Colonels, outscoring Curry 19-12 over the final 10 minutes of action as Maine Maritime would take the game by a 64-44 final. Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) and Felix were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Mariners. Irwin and Plunkett represented Curry on the All-Tournament Team. Katlyn Grover (Bernardston, Mass.) of Mount Holyoke and Taylor Ingram Martin (Merrit Island, Fla.) of Pine Manor closed out the All-Tournament Team.

Curry will next play on Tuesday, November 21 when they travel to Johnson & Wales (RI) for a 7:00 p.m. tip. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, November 28 when they host Maine-Farmington at 5:30 p.m.
