Women's Basketball Falls to Visiting Roger Williams University 67-42 in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College fell to visiting Roger Williams University, 67-42, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Thursday evening in Milton, Mass. With the win the Hawks improve to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the Colonels fall to 6-8 on the season and 3-4 in CCC play.

The first quarter started as a back-and-forth affair with three different lead changes and two ties over the ten minutes. Junior Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) started the scoring with a three-pointer and was followed by a layup from senior Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) a couple minutes later to put Curry up 5-0. As the quarter went on both teams battled to a 13-11 score after one frame in favor of the Colonels.

Keeney again opened the scoring in the quarter however Roger Williams went on a 15-5 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter to gain their biggest lead by a score of 25-18. Curry responded with their own 7-0 run to end the last three minutes of the half to come back to within two after a successful jump shot from senior Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) to put the score at 27-25.

Keeney finished the half with a game second-best nine points while freshman Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) "stole the show" recording six steals in the first 20 minutes. Junior Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) led the game with 11 points for the Hawks.

Within the first two minutes, Roger Williams increased their lead to nine with a 34-25 lead after senior Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) sank both of her free-throws. The Colonels battled back and after trading baskets, lowered the deficit to seven after Irwin hit both of her shots from the charity stripe bringing the score to 38-31. However after that, the Hawks increased their lead to 15 following a three from Ariola with three and a half minutes left. Over the last three minutes, the teams worked to a 54-36 score after three full.

The fourth quarter was much of the same with Roger Williams putting up more points and eventually went to a final score of 67-42 after 60 minutes. Keeney finished with the most points for Curry, 11, while adding a pair of rebounds. She was followed by Griffith with 10 who tore down three rebounds. Irwin finished the game with ten total steals and pulled down a team second-best six rebounds. Sophomore Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) finished with the most rebounds (8) while adding three blocks for the Colonels.

The Hawks were led by a game-best effort in points from Ariola, who finished with 21 while adding three boards. She was followed by Lowerre who finished with 16 and pulled down a team second-best seven rebounds as well. Junior Bridget Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) was right behind, putting up 15 points while pulling down three rebounds herself. Sophomore Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) led the game in rebounds, finishing with 11 total while chipping in six points.

Both teams return to conference action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as Curry hosts Nichols College and Roger Williams travels to the University of New England.
