Women's Basketball Captures CCC Victory 57-47 at Gordon College

WENHAM, Mass.—Curry Women's Basketball used a late spurt to pull way from Gordon in the final five minutes and held on for a 57-47 victory at the Bennett Center on Saturday. Sophomore Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Colonels. Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) each had 10 points for the Scots in the losing effort.

The Colonels get back to .500 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference at 3-3 and 5-7 overall. Gordon drops its sixth straight conference game to begin the year and falls to 4-9 overall.

After the Colonels scored the first bucket of the game, Gordon tallied eight consecutive points to take an 8-2 lead through the first five minutes. Gordon's offense stalled from there and Curry was able to take advantage with a 9-0 run to end the opening quarter.

Senior Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) had the hot hand for the Colonels in the first half, especially from behind the arch. The guard hit a triple on three of four possessions at one point to help her team build a seven-point advantage approaching the half.

Curry held a two possession lead for much of the second quarter, but a late bucket from Tafoya closed the gap to 23-20 just before the halftime buzzer.

A game of runs in the third quarter only allowed the Colonels to add a point to their lead entering the final 10 minutes. Gordon closed the disadvantage to just a single point in the fourth quarter, but a scoring drought over the final five minutes did them in.

Curry went on an 11-2 run over a four-minute span, with most of its offense coming from the charity stripe. The Colonels closed the game out from there with a double-digit lead in the final minute.

Starting guards Deiorio and Irwin also had big games with 13 and 14 respectively. Rice played a major role off the bench with the aforementioned double-double and made Gordon uncomfortable on offense with her shot-altering ability.

Tafoya just missed out on a double-double for the Scots with 10 points and nine boards. Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) had seven points and a team-high four assists. Sydney Pefanis (Cumming, Ga.) had nine points and five rebounds off the bench.

Gordon travels to Nichols next Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.  Curry hosts Suffolk on Tuesday in a 5:30 p.m. start.  (Game recap courtesy of Gordon Sports Information)
