Women's Basketball Falls 72-50 at Conference Rival Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Sammie Battaini scored a game-high 19 and senior Sam McCann added 18 and nine rebounds, as the Western New England University women's basketball team defeated Curry College, 72-50, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears improve their record to 11-7 (6-6 CCC) while the Colonels fall to 11-8 (8-4 CCC).

Junior Chelsea Vujs recorded a double-double, totaling 12 points and 12 rebounds, while dishing out five assists.

Junior Kerry White scored 16 points to lead Curry, and sophomore Alyssa Keeney added seven. Junior Shannon Griffith had a team-best six rebounds. Senior Kylie Beltz had five assists.

The Golden Bears' first half shooting was led by Battaini's 13 points, consisting of four three-pointers. The Golden Bears outshot the Colonels in the first half, posting a 44.8 percentage from the field, compared to Curry's 28.6 percentage. WNE also controlled the boards early on, pulling down 24 first-half rebounds; Curry grabbed 17.

Efficient offensive play aided the Golden Bears' effort throughout the entire game. They shot 47.5 percent from the field, on 28-of-59. The Colonels connected on 22-of-66 shots for a 33.3 field-goal percentage.

The Golden Bears will face off against Gordon on Tuesday at home, in another CCC matchup. The Colonels return home to host Nichols on Tuesday in a league contest beginning at 5:30 p.m.
