Women's Basketball Holds Off Visiting Johnson & Wales, 59-52, in Non-Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Women's Basketball team held off visiting Johnson & Wales University in non-conference play Saturday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 2-1 overall.

Curry took its biggest lead in the first half (26-8) after senior Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) sank a two-pointer with 7:44 on the clock. With 24 seconds left in the first frame, Johnson & Wales freshman Sarah Duryea (Middle Village N.Y.) went to the free-throw line and made both attempts, cutting the deficit to 34-25 going into halftime.
The Colonels opened the second half on an 8-4 run, jumping out to a 15-point lead (44-29) with 16:50 remaining in regulation. Fallon started the run with another jump shot, and junior Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) capped it off with a made layup. The Wildcats would later claw their way to within one point (53-52) with 1:22 remaining before Curry iced the game at the free-throw line.
Curry was led by Fallon with 11 points, nine boards and four steals. Griffith also contributed 11 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) led all players with 13 rebounds.
Freshman Ashley Thompson (Bellingham, Mass.) led the Wildcats with team bests in points (11) and rebounds (12). Classmate Duryea chipped in with nine points and four steals.
The Colonels return to action Tuesday night as they host Framingham State University at 6 p.m. Johnson & Wales will host Rhode Island College for a 7 p.m. contest on December 4.
