Women's Basketball Captures 67-62 Road Win at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women’s basketball team suffered a 67-62 setback against Curry in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Thursday evening.

Sophomore Justine Hughes (New York, N.Y.) led the way for JWU with 12 points and three rebounds while fellow senior Katurah Andrews (Hartford, Conn.) had 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds in the loss for the Wildcats.  Junior Marina Millian (Chester, N.Y.) was also in double-figures with 11 points in the setback.

Junior Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) led the way for Curry with 17 points and five rebounds while freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds in the win.  Freshman Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points for the Colonels.

The two teams traded baskets in the early going with the game tied 9-9 at the 12:50 mark on a jumper by Deiorio.  Curry then used a 6-0 run, capped by a pair of three pointers by Deiorio to take the lead 15-9 at the 11:38 mark.  Johnson & Wales cut the lead to just one point several times late in the stanza, including a 25-24 score on a jumper by sophomore Samantha Handrick (Castleton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) with 1:57 on the clock.  Curry took the 29-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. 

The visiting Colonels extended their lead in the opening stages of the second half and took their largest lead of the game on a pair of free throws from junior Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.), going up 40-29 with 16:43 remaining.  JWU responded, however and took their first lead of the game with 8:47 left as a jumper by Andrews made the score 48-47.  Curry then used a 16-8 run, capped by a free throw from Rafferty to take the 63-56 lead with 3:25 remaining.  The Colonels then held on for the 67-62 victory.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 2-4 for the year while Curry improves to 4-4 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, December 10th when they travel to Clark for a non-conference contest at 1:00 p.m. (Game recap courtesy of JWU Sports Information)
