Women's Basketball Notches 72-57 Win Over Visiting Nichols

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College had four players score in double figures, as the host Colonels recorded a 72-57 victory over visiting Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Nichols College in women’s basketball action Wednesday evening in Milton. Curry improves to 7-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while the Bison fall to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in CCC action.

In the opening half, Curry got points at the line on four-straight possessions as they overtook an early Nichols lead. The Colonels used a 14-3 run to expand their lead to 12, scoring nine at the line in the spree. Curry built up a 15-point lead at the break and was afforded 13 points at the free throw line on 81.3% shooting (13-of-16).

Nichols came out firing in the second half, opening the stanza on a 19-6 run that brought the Bison within three just eight minutes into the frame. But the Colonels held the Bison to just three points over the next six minutes and used back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) to regain an 18-point lead, 62-44.

Fouls continued to play a big role in the game, as the Colonels saw junior Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.), freshman Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) and Assarian foul out within two minutes of each other. Nichols capitalized with 6-of-7 free throws afforded in the span and followed with a steal and dish from junior Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) to senior Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) to cut the Colonels' lead to nine.

Sophomore Katie King (Dorchester, Mass.) sank a three-pointer on Curry's next possession to take the wind out of the Bison's sails and outscored Nichols, 10-4, in the final two minutes to finish out the 72-57 win.

Each team committed 24 turnovers in the game, but the Bison converted that into 13 points. Curry held a 34-18 scoring advantage in the paint, and used its league-best three-point defense to keep Nichols scoreless from beyond the arc in the game.

Curry was led by Scrubb with 13 points. Rafferty, King and freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) chipped in with 11 points apiece. Rafferty also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Beltz dished out five assists.

Junior Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) pulled down a game-high 11 boards to go with 12 points which included an 8-for-10 effort at the free-throw line. Shaughnessy also scored 12, while adding seven rebounds and a team-high five steals. Lindgren chipped in with 12 points and freshman Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbrahma, Mass.) added 11.
