WBB Falls 82-54 at WNEC in Conference Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) scored a season high 22 points as the Western New England College women’s basketball team posted an 82-54 victory over Curry in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon (Jan. 9) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Savino made 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 three-pointers, and all seven foul shots. She also dished out three assists and had a steal as the Golden Bears improved their record to 7-3 with their fourth straight win. Senior guard Kailah Al-Darraji (Dover, NH) added 13 points after connecting on 5-for-6 shots from the floor.

Western New England College scored the first 22 points of the game and held the Colonels scoreless for the opening 8:06 in taking a 38-19 lead at the break.

Freshman guard Julia Scrubb (Stowe, VT) led the visitors with 11 points and five rebounds in a reserve role. Freshman guard Carolyn Houston (Melrose, NY) contributed nine points, four rebounds, and three steals. Also for the Colonels, junior forward Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA) totaled seven points and a game-high seven rebounds. Freshman guard Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, MA) also netted seven points.

All 11 players scored points for Western New England College with sophomore forward Sarah Proper having eight points and six rebounds. Junior guard Loren Stock (Rocky Hill, CT) chipped-in with seven points while freshman guard Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) had six points, six assists, and five rebounds.

WNEC finished shooting 50.9% from the field while Curry came back to make 30.3% of the field-goal attempts. The Colonels held a 41-36 edge off the boards, thanks mainly to grabbing 22 offensive rebounds. Curry is now 4-6.
