Bartow, FL – The Curry Softball team wrapped up their spring break trip in Florida on Friday with a pair of wins over and Carroll and St. Scholastica. The Colonels beat Carroll 9-0, and St. Scholastica 8-0. The Colonels end the trip with a 5-5 record.
Game One vs Carroll
The Colonels had multiple runners on base in every inning of this game, but didn't push any runs across until the third inning. Mary Rodrigues and Natalia O'Kleasky each singled, and Renee Gonneville walked to load the bases for Jillian Rogers. She would reach on an error that scored two runs, and then Morgan Barmash knocked in two more with a single. The final run in the inning was scored on an Abby Greene double. The Colonels would load the bases again in the fourth, and made the score 6-0 with a Gracie Keyes walk. The Colonels would slowly inch towards the mercy rule in the fifth, adding another run on a Rodrigues sacrifice fly. A Karlie Pontes double would make it 8-0 in the fifth, and the Colonels got one last run on a Rodrigues single.
The Colonels had lots of offense, but they didn't need it, as Jillian Rogers was excellent on the mound. For the second straight start she struck out eight while only allowing a single hit and two walks. She now has a 0.34 ERA on the season, and has struck out 35 hitters in 21 innings.
Jillian Rogers, Morgan Barmash, Abby Greene, and Mary Rodrigues all had two hits in the game. Greene also walked twice, reaching base a total of four times. Renee Gonneville walked three times
Game Two vs St. Scholastica
For the second straight game the Colonels were able to get baserunners on early. This time they took advantage immediately in the first inning. Jillian Rogers and Morgan Barmash had back-to-back RBI singles, followed by a sacrifice fly, and then an RBI single from Karlie Pontes. This put the Colonels up 4-0 after one inning. The Saints threatened in the third, loading the bases with one out, but Barmash was able to get out of the jam in the circle. The Colonels would extend their lead in the fourth on a Natalia O'Kleasky RBI single. The Colonels then ended the game in the fifth with three runs, two of which came on an Abby Greene single.
O'Kleasky, Rogers, and Barmash, the Colonels two through four hitters, each had two hits. Barmash also pitched four shutout innings on the mound.
Up Next – The Colonels will have some time off, as their next time hitting the field will be on Tuesday, March 25th, when they host Fitchburg State at 3pm.
