Wood Twirls Gem as Softball Earns Split with UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Curry College softball team earned a Commonwealth Coast Conference split with the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at Nor'easter Diamond. Curry won game one 2-0 before falling in game two by a final score of 6-1.

With the split, Curry moves to 6-27 overall on the season and 2-10 in CCC play.

Game 1 - Curry 2, UNE 0

Curry sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) was the story of game one, throwing a complete game shutout to secure her second win of the season.

Wood allowed just three hits in seven innings pitched while walking only one and striking out two Nor'easters in the victory. She needed only 79 pitches to finish the complete game, throwing 55 strikes.

Curry's offense started in the top of the fourth inning. A Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) ground rule double led off the inning, and a batter later, the junior would cross home plate on a throwing error off a Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.) sacrifice bunt.

A one-out double from sophomore Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) set up an insurance run for Curry in the top of the seventh, as pinch runner Maddy White (Everett, Mass.) came around to score from second on a base hit up the middle from senior Lexi Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.).

The Schwartz and White doubles and Buckner's RBI single were Curry's only three hits on the day.

Game 2 - UNE 6, Curry 1

Curry got on the board first in game two, but could not hold on to secure the victory as the Nor'easters rallied to salvage a split.

Willis delivered an RBI bunt single in the top of the first inning to plate junior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) as Curry looked to earn the sweep, but the lead would be short-lived. UNE scored one run in the bottom of the second and five runs in the bottom of the fourth to account for all of their offense in the comeback.

Freshman Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) took the loss for the Colonels, allowing five earned over 3.1 innings. In relief, Wood had her second impressive outing of the day, allowing just one hit in 2.2 shutout innings to keep the Colonels in striking distance.

Next up for Curry, they will turn around on Sunday for a CCC doubleheader against Salve Regina at home at D. Forbes Will Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
