Softball Swept By Western New England

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team dropped a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader to Western New England University on Friday afternoon by final scores of 8-4 and 5-3 at D. Forbes Will Field.

Game One – Western New England 8, Curry 4

Curry jumped ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the first. Senior Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Mass.) plated the run after classmate Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice to second base. Sophomore Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) also registered a fielder's choice to second base, which allowed freshman Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) to score.

Western New England answered with two runs in the visitor half of the third. Junior Dina DiBlasio (Norwalk, Conn.) singled through the left side and advanced to second on the throw. Freshman Kaleigh Blades (Merrimack, N.H.) advanced to third on the play and scored on an error in left field. Sophomore Lexie Hemstock (Cheshire, Conn.) also crossed home to trim the Colonels' lead to 4-2.

The Golden Bears tagged Curry for six runs in the sixth to round out the scoring. Sophomore Kailey Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) contributed an RBI single down the left field to score DiBlasio. Sophomore Ines Baez Flores (Springfield, Mass.) plated the next run of the frame when she touched home following a failed pickoff attempt. Senior Allie Buzzeo (Stamford, Conn.) continued the frame when she reached on an error, allowing sophomore Amaya George (Wynantskill, N.Y.) to score. Hemstock drove in Buzzeo on a base knock to left field while sophomore Cori Rizzo (Methuen, Mass.) delivered a two-run shot to left for the final runs of the contest.

Senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) took the loss in relief, surrendering six runs on six hits. Senior Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) was credited with the win, tossing a complete game. She gave up four runs on nine hits to go with three strikeouts.

Junior Alexis Bucker (Foxboro, Mass.) and Peran each finished with two hits in the contest for Curry.

Game Two – Western New England 5, Curry 3

Western New England grabbed the lead in the first when Carrano reached on an error, which allowed Hemstock to cross home. Rizzo recorded the last run when she scored on a passed ball. The Golden Bears tacked another on in the second on a Rizzo single to the catcher, plating Emily Cooney () to push the advantage to 3-0.

Curry got a run back in the second. Freshman Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) doubled to right field to plate Ferullo.

The Colonels continued to chip away at the deficit in the third when Buckner connected on an RBI double to right center, bringing around senior Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.).

The Golden Bears added one in the fourth on a single to left field from Carrano. The base hit brought home sophomore Paige Baca (Loma Linda, Calif.).

The squads traded tallies in the fifth for the last runs of the contest. Baca drove in Buzzeo on a single to right field while Newcomb recorded a double to center, plating sophomore Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.).

Freshman Kayli Rosenkrans (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up the victory in the circle for Western New England, tossing 5.1 innings. She gave up three runs on six hits while registering two walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Megan Beebe (Ellington, Conn.) converted the save, pitching the last 1.2 innings.

Sophomore Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.) pitched for the Colonels and allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Freshman Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) threw the last three frames and gave up one run on two hits. She walked one and fanned two.

Curry (5-18 overall, 4-10 CCC) and Western New England (12-6 overall, 9-5 CCC) will play another doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 24, in Springfield beginning at noon.
