Nichols Takes Two From Softball to Finish Six-Game Set

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team lost its series finale to Nichols College on Wednesday afternoon, dropping game one in a 6-2 final before falling in the nightcap, 11-7.

Game One – Nichols 6, Curry 2

The Bison got on the board in the top of the first, tallying a pair of runs. Graduate student Taylor Commesso (Hingham, Mass.) delivered a two-run homer to center field. The round-tripper also scored senior Colleen Callahan (Billerica, Mass.).

Nichols got another run across in the third on a double to left center by freshman Hailey Bogusz (Montague, Mass.). The two-base knock brought around Commesso to give the Bison the 3-0 advantage.

Curry plated both of its runs in the fifth frame. Sophomore Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) connected on a single down the right field line to score sophomore Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) while freshman Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) grounded out to short with the bases loaded. Senior Kiana Lloyd (Worcester, Mass.) crossed home on the play.

Nichols got their final three runs across in the seventh for the 6-2 final. Junior Mackenzie Bourgault (Fairhaven, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to bring around sophomore Allie Brown (Middlebury, Conn.) while Callahan hit a two-run homer to center.

Junior Candice Nelson (Oxford, Mass.) was credited with the win in the circle for the visitors. She tossed a complete game and gave up two runs on three hits to go along with six strikeouts and a walk. Senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits along with three walks and four strikeouts.

Game Two – Nichols 11, Curry 7

Nichols jumped out to a 9-2 lead after three and a half innings, thanks to an eight-run top of the fourth.

After tacking another on to increase the advantage to eight (10-2), Curry would plate four in the home half of the fifth. Newcomb singled up the middle to score classmate Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) and junior Alexis Bucker (Foxboro, Mass.) contributed a base knock up the middle to plate Ferullo. Junior Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) singled through the left side to bring around Buckner while freshman Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, which brought senior Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.) home to make it a 10-6 ball game.

The squads would trade runs in the sixth and would go scoreless in the seventh for the 11-7 final.

Sophomore Alyssa Ouellette (Auburn, N.H.) picked up the win in game two in the circle. She gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits to go along with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Freshman Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) was given the loss. She surrendered nine runs on 12 hits while walking five and fanning two in the setback.

Curry (5-13 overall) remains home to host Endicott College on Saturday, April 17 in a doubleheader starting at noon. Nichols (15-7) returns home and will welcome in Western New England University in for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
