Softball Drops a Pair at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Curry College softball team dropped a doubleheader at Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon, losing by final scores of 13-4 and 11-3 in conference action.

Game One – Roger Williams 13, Curry 4 (5 innings)

Roger Williams got on the board in the bottom of the first after a two-RBI double to center by junior Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.), which plated sophomore Emma MacLean (Newton, Mass.) and senior Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.). The Hawks tacked on four more in the second and five in the third to increase the lead to 11-0.  

Freshman Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) delivered a two-RBI single to the shortstop in the fourth frame to plate junior Alexis Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) and senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) to make the score 11-2.

The Hawks answered back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. MacLean singled to short to send sophomore Jax Beaulieu (Sandwich, Mass.) home and Lombardo reached on an error, which allowed Provencal to score.

Curry tallied a pair in the fifth on a two-run single to left field by Buckner to plate sophomores Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) and Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.).  

Junior Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) (6-2 overall) went the distance and took the complete game victory, allowing four earned runs to go along with five strikeouts.

McDermott was credited with the loss, giving up two runs on two hits to go with one walk.

Game Two – Roger Williams 11, Curry 3 (5 innings)

Senior Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.) was 3-for-3 with a three RBI and a trio of runs scored as Roger Williams fell behind 2-0 in the second and outscored the Colonels 11-1 over the remainder of the contest for the win.

Junior Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) scored on an error in the second before sophomore Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.)  had an RBI single to center to bring around Price to give Curry a 2-0 lead. In the home half of the second, Bay Naples singled to left and advanced to second on the throw. On the same play, Goria scored on an error in left field. Provencal followed that up with a double to left center to plate Naples to pull even at two.

The Colonels hopped back in front in the third on a home run by senior Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.).

The Hawks came back with nine unanswered runs: six in the third and three in the fourth to end the contest after five innings.  

Sophomore Taylor Myers (East Haven, Conn.) (1-3 overall) tossed 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out one to get the win.

Newcomb (2-3 overall) threw 3.1 innings and took the loss for Curry.

Curry (3-7 overall, 3-5 CCC) will play Roger Williams (9-7 overall, 4-4 CCC) once again in Bristol on Wednesday, April 7 in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
