Softball Salvages Split with Hawks

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team salvaged a split a pair of against Roger Williams University on Friday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action. The Colonels fell 9-0 in game one in five innings. They captured game two in a 5-4 final to take the split.

Game One – Roger Williams 9, Curry 0 (5 innings)

Roger Williams took an early 4-0 lead in the opening frame. Junior Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) reached first on an error, which allowed senior Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) to cross home for the first run. After a stolen base, hit-by-pitch and a strikeout, freshman Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) singled up the middle to plate Lombardo and sophomore Jax Beaulieu (Sandwich, Mass.). Graduate student Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) capped the scoring in the inning when she scored on a wild pitch.

The Hawks added one in the second and third to increase the margin to 6-0. Chatowsky singled to third base and Provencal would score on the throw. Provencal was back in the action in the third when she grounded out to second base to plate freshman Madison Tobin (Pittsfield, Mass.).

Roger Williams tacked on three more in the fourth, which would eventually end the contest after five innings, 9-0.

Junior Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was credited with the victory in the circle. She only allowed three hits and fanned six in five innings. Freshman Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs (one earned) on four hits to go along with three strikeouts and three walks.  

Game Two – Curry 5, Roger Williams 4

The Hawks struck first in game two, plating a pair in the second inning. Senior Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch and Provencal delivered a base knock to right field to score sophomore Emma MacLean (Newton, Mass.).

Curry answered right back with each of its five runs in home half of the second. Junior Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) singled to left field to score senior Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.). Freshman Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) went on to score on an error by the catcher and sophomore Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) contributed a single to second base, which plated Price. Senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) doubled to right field to bring home Bussiere and sophomore Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.).

Roger Williams got two back in the sixth. MacLean tallied an RBI single to center while senior Bay Naples (Livingston, N.J.) doubled down the left field line to score MacLean. The Hawks were unable to plate the equalizer as the Colonels took the nightcap in the one-run contest.

Newcomb tossed a complete game and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits while fanning one. Senior Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) was credited with the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits. She struck out three in the setback.  

Curry (3-5 overall, 3-3 CCC) and Roger Williams (7-7 overall, 2-4 CCC) will square off in another doubleheader on Saturday, April 3 in Bristol, R.I. starting at noon.
