Softball Takes One of Two on Third Day of Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Curry College softball defeated Nazareth College in a 4-1 final before suffering an 11-1 loss in five inning to SUNY Canton in the second contest on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Game One – Curry 4, Nazareth 1

The teams traded runs in the first inning. Senior Kristen Simmons (Viktor, N.Y.) connected on a one-run double to right center to score sophomore Aubrin Smith (Deposit, N.Y.). In the bottom of the frame, the Colonels got a homer from junior Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.) that went over the fence in center field.

With the score tied at 1-1 after three and a half innings, Curry got two aboard in the fourth. Freshman Kayla Georgeu (South Easton, Mass.) manufactured a run on a sacrifice fly on a pop up to short, which was deep enough to plate junior Alex Chase (Biddeford, Maine) for the one-run advantage.

The Colonels increased its lead in the bottom of the sixth after junior Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) grounded out to third to score freshman Karly Estremera (South Easton, Mass.) and then Perzan singled to the pitcher to plate freshman Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) for the 4-1 final.

Perzan paced Curry with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Sophomore Allison Smith (Windsor, N.Y.) led the Golden Flyers with two hits.

Junior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) picked up the win in the circle for the Colonels. She gave up one run on four hits while walking two and striking out five. Freshman Emily Daciw (Angelica, N.Y.) was credited with the loss for Nazareth. She gave up two runs on three hits while walking four and fanning eight.

Game Two – SUNY Canton 11, Curry 1 (Five Innings)

In the second game against SUNY Canton, the Roos jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an three-run homer from junior Nicole Ferch (Cudahy, Wis.), a fielder's choice from sophomore Callee Zulauf (Ogdensburg, N.Y.), a one-run single by junior Shaylyn DeVito (Russell, N.Y.), and sophomore Selena Tasli (Shirley, N.Y.) singled to right to score Zulaufl.

The teams each scored once in the third. Ferch tripled to right center to plate Tasli. In the home half, Kiana Lloyd came around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman to make the score 7-1.

The Roos put up four more runs: one in the fourth and three in the fifth for the 11-1 final.

Freshman Alexis Fagnant (North Kingstown, R.I.) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored. All but two student-athletes in the SUNY Canton lineup registered multiple hits in the contest.

Perzan and sophomore Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.) had two hits apiece for the Colonels.

Fagnant registered the win in the circle. She surrendered one run on six hits. Additionally she struck out five and walked three. Junior Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) was credited with the loss for Curry. She gave up eight runs on 14 hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Curry (2-4 overall) will have a day off on Wednesday and will return to action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday.
