Softball Swept By Eastern Nazarene in Opening CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. – Eastern Nazarene College picked up a pair of wins over Curry College on Thursday afternoon by final scores of 4-0 and 4-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference softball play at D. Forbes Will Field.

Eastern Nazarene pitching held the Colonels to only one run on 11 hits on the day. Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and struck out 13 to earn her fifth win of the season. Lauren Weidler (Lansdale, Pa.) secured her first win in the nightcap, going the distance and allowing one run on seven hits while fanning three.

Game 1 – Eastern Nazarene 4, Curry 0

Eastern Nazarene grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single, a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice fly. Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) singled to left to drive in Dominique Santos (Lancaster, Calif.) to grab the 1-0 lead. Emily Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) kept the inning going when she reached on a fielder's choice, plating Kayleen Garrick (Sparks, Nev.) The final run of the frame came courtesy of a sacrifice fly to left field by Schaffer, which sent Weidler home.

The Lions tacked on their final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. After Garrick doubled to left field, Clements drove her in with a single to right.

Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.) went the distance for the Colonels, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three.

Game 2 – Eastern Nazarene 4, Curry 1

Gomez ended up with two hits in the nightcap while six others ended up with one apiece for Eastern Nazarene. Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.), Lambert, and Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) closed the contest with two hits each while Carolyn Lynch (Ipswich, Mass.) added one hit for the Curry.

A foul-out by Santos put the Lions on the board in the fifth inning, allowing Viviana Coix (Warrenville, Ill.) to cross home. Garrick kept the scoring going with a double to center field to plate Schaffer to go up by two runs. Later in the frame, Weidler reached on a fielder's choice, but an error by the catcher allowed Haley Viscovich (Modesto, Calif.) to score to go up 3-0. Viscovich was back in the action in the sixth when she singled to left to score Gomez.

Curry's lone run came in the seventh as Oatway led off with a solo home run to left.  

Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) got the starting nod and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out three.

Curry (2-10 overall, 0-2 CCC) will next travel to Western New England University on Saturday, March 31 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Nazarene (9-5 overall, 2-0 CCC) returns to action at Wentworth on Friday, March 30 starting at 3:30 p.m.
