Softball Falls to Roger Williams in Double Elimination Phase of CCC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  – The third-seeded Roger Williams University softball team defeated seventh-seeded Curry College, 10-1, during the double elimination round of the 2017 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Park on the campus of Western New England University.

Senior catcher Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) led the Hawks offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Junior Valerie Moran (Syosset, N.Y.) also drove in two runs for Roger Williams (23-16), while classmate Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freshman Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) earned the win in the circle (2-5) after surrendering one run during a five inning complete game performance.

Freshman Michaela Colleran (East Bridgewater, Mass.) accounted for three of Curry's seven hits, while junior Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Rebecca Black (East Greenwich, R.I.) got the start for the Colonels (16-22) and dropped to 5-7 with the loss.

Curry plated one run in the top of the first inning, as senior Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) walked with one out before eventually coming in to score on a ground out by junior Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.).

Roger Williams answered with ten runs on seven hits and seven errors in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) led off the frame with a single to right field, and the Hawks never looked back.

Moise came in to score on an RBI single by senior Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.H.), and Grosso followed with an RBI single. Freshman Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) came up next and recorded the third straight RBI single for the Hawks, before Moran made it 6-0 with a two-run single through the left side of the infield. Roger Williams would add on four more runs in the frame with the help of five Curry miscues to claim a 10-1 advantage.

Neither team scored the rest of the way as the Hawks opened their CCC Tournament run with a convincing five-inning triumph.
Curry will look to stave off elimination on Friday in a matchup with number four seeded Endicott in a noon contest that will take place at Salve Regina University. Roger Williams will play eighth seeded Gordon on Friday at 10 a.m. That game will also take place at Salve Regina.
