Softball Falls to Brockport and UMass Dartmouth in Florida Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Curry College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by non-conference opponents Brockport, 14-2 and UMass Dartmouth, 3-0 in their opening games of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Colonels drop to 0-2 on the season while the Golden Eagles and Corsairs move to 1-2 and 5-0, respectively.

GAME ONE

Brockport got the scoring started in the second inning on a three-RBI double from Alexis Ross (Hamburg, N.Y.). The Golden Eagles would tack on four more runs in the third to build a 7-0 lead.

Curry would get on the board in their next half inning with two outs and two on, Rachel Byrd (Hampsted, N.H.) singled up the middle to score Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.).

Brockport tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 9-1. Ross stole second base and on the same play Kathleen Laskey (Webster, N.Y.) scored on the throw. The frame's scoring finished when Casey Danko (Wrappinger Falls, N.Y.) singled to left field to drive in Ross.

The Colonels got on the board one more time in the contest as they tallied one run in the bottom of the fifth. Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) got the inning started with a single to right. Korona followed with a double to left center in which Bruno advanced to third. Following two strikeouts, Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) singled to left to drive in Bruno.

The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the top of the seventh as they tallied five runs on four hits. They would take the game by a 14-2 final over Curry.

Korona and Oatway each went 2-for-3 at the plate while Bruno, Mikayla Lambert (Blackstone, Mass.), Byrd, and Jess Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) each tallied one hit apiece. Becky Knorr (Greece, N.Y.) was credited with the win, tossing a complete game. The junior gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out nine and walking just one. Jordan Lizotte (Rehoboth, Mass.) got the loss for the Colonels, giving up seven runs on nine hits and walking three.

GAME TWO

UMass Dartmouth opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) singled through the left side to score McKenzie Joyce (Marblehead, Mass.). The Corsairs tacked on two more in the fourth on a single to left to score Spinuzzi and Nicole Vachon (Westport, Mass.) to take the contest by a 3-0 final.

Curry was limited to just five hits in the contest by UMass Darmouth pitcher Hannah Smith (Attleboro, Mass.). The junior went the distance, giving up no runs on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. Her counterpart Lambert tossed six innings and gave up three runs on nine hits while striking out one and walking one.

Bruno and Lambert paced the Colonels in game two, each going 2-for-4 at the plate. Korona added the final hit for Curry in a 1-for-3 game. Three Corsairs tallied two hits each and three more added one apiece.

Curry continues their Florida swing on Monday at 9:00 a.m. where they are set to battle Edgewood. A matchup with Wilmington (Ohio) will follow at 11:00 a.m.
