Colonels Tame Leopards in Conference Doubleheader, 8-0 (5inn) and 6-0

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team grabbed two conference wins Wednesday afternoon against Wentworth at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels took the first game 8-0 in five innings and downed the Leopards 6-0 in the night cap. Curry improves to 13-17 overall and 4-10 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play. Wentworth falls to 4-21 overall and 0-14 in the CCC.

Game One

The Colonels jumped onto the board early and never looked back. Junior Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) led the bottom of the first inning with a deep shot to left-center field to give Curry a 1-0 lead. Sophomore April Adams (Burlington, Mass.) singled and didn't have to wait long, as Sophomore Mikayla Lambert doubled off the wall, bring Adams all the way around to score and extend the lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Sophomore Kevi Oatway (East Hartford, Conn.) grounded out to second, driving in Lambert.

After a 1-2-3 top half of the second inning, the Colonels got right back to it, putting another four runs onto the board and extending their lead to seven. Freshman Talia Forte (North Scituate, R.I.) collected her first collegiate hit, doubling to center field to drive in Sophomore Morgan Bogardus (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.). Bruno followed up with a triple of her own to score Forte. Bruno would later score in the inning on a single by Sophomore Rachel Byrd (Hampstead, N.H.). Oatway singled, allowing Adams to cross the plate, giving the Colonels a 7-0 lead. Curry added one more in the bottom of the third when Forte scored on a passed ball.

Vanessa Weymouth went 2-2 on the day for Wentworth, doubling in both of her plate appearances.

Lambert (4-4) picked up the victory for the Colonels, throwing five innings, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out six and issuing no walks. Hayley Rutkey (1-11) took the loss for the Leopards, throwing three innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits.

Game Two

In the night cap both pitchers dueled back and forth, not allowing any runs for the first two innings. Lambert broke through for the Colonels in the bottom of the third inning, hitting a two-run homerun to left-center field to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the fourth frame, Curry added four more runs to the board to extend their lead and give Junior McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.) a 6-0 lead to pitch with. Bogardus started the inning with a double and Bruno followed up two batters later with a double of her own to trade places with Bogardus. Two batters later, Lambert belted a double of her own, driving in both Adams and Bruno. Sophomore Jessica Saluti (Braintree, Mass.) singled later in the inning to plate Lambert.

Barlow (5-3) pitched one of her best games of the season to pick up the win, throwing all seven innings while allowing just two hits and striking out one. Erica Norquist (3-10) took the loss throwing six innings and allowing six runs on 14 hits.
