Alumni Squad Squeaks Out a Win in the 17th Alumni Softball Game

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Softball Program held its 17th Alumni Game on Sunday, September 27th.  There were 20 softball alumni who returned to the diamond ready for action.

Head Coach Bruce Weckworth was pleased to have two game balls thrown out to start the game by Naveiha and Tajeiha Madison (daughters of Joneiha Veiga '12).  Their actions must have inspired Mom, as Joneiha had several amazing defensive plays and a base hit for the alumni squad.  Current Assistant Coach Katie Berardi '05 guided this talented group of alums to victory.

The alumni squad had 8 hits but the game changer was a two-run double by Janelle Mayo'11 in the top of the 6th inning that propelled her team to victory. In the first inning, there were four- consecutive singles by Megan Flaherty'14, Allie Carver '15, Ariel LaRosa '15 and Emily Taylor '07 that produced an early three-run lead for the alumni team.

The solid pitching efforts of Taylor Ahearn '15 and Janelle Mayo'11 kept the current team's bats in check throughout the day. They may have been aided by the number of defenders who played behind them but as we know, "defense wins championships."

Pitching duties for the current team were handled by Mikayla Lambert '18, Becca Black '18 and McKenna Barlow '17. The current team had seven hits and took advantage of a couple of errors to make the game close but couldn't rally as the Alumni Team prevailed 6-5. Jordan Lizotte '18 and Mikayla Lambert '18 both had run-producing singles for the Colonels. The umpiring duties for the day were handled by Kate Fallon '05 and her dad, Ken Fallon. Scoreboard operations were nicely handled by our Team IMPACT girl, Lauren Dunn.

It was a reunion of former Commonwealth Coast Conference All-Star players and members of the Curry College Athletic Hall of Fame. Leanne Tarkanian '00 and Nicole Leckie Breton '01, along with many other great players, enjoyed the day of softball. It certainly was an exciting game with plenty of laughs as well. Coach Weckworth was also pleased to have seven potential recruits in the stands checking out the festivities. A post-game pizza picnic for about 120 people was held at the field to wrap up the day.

The Curry College Softball Program would like to thank all the players who made it back for this great day of softball and would like to invite you to attend some of our games in the Spring.  Perhaps one more Spring Break Trip to Ft. Myers, Florida would do the trick. If you were unable to make it to the Alumni Game this year, plan on joining us next year.  It's a really good time!
