Doubleheader Split With Endicott Earns Softball the #3 Seed in CCC Tournament

MILTON, Mass. – In the regular-season finales for both schools, Curry and Endicott split a doubleheader in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Thursday afternoon in Milton. The Gulls captured the opener 4-3 before the Colonels rebounded in the second game, 3-2. Curry is now 23-15 on the season and 12-6 in CCC play, while Endicott stands at 22-11-1 overall and 14-4 in conference action. With the split, the Colonels clinched the #3 seed in the CCC Tournament, while the Gulls captured the #1 seed.

GAME 1

In the opener, Curry pushed a run across in its first at-bat after Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.) came around to score on a hit by Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.). Endicott pulled even at 1-1 in the top of the second as Rachel Couto (Chelmsford, Mass.) led off with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single by Chrissy Gikas (Danvers, Mass.).

The Colonels scored a single run in the bottom of the second when Flaherty stroked a run-scoring hit that plated Paige Smigiel (Lisbon, Conn.). Endicott responded again with three runs in the top of the third to forge a 4-2 lead. Jess Linden (Stratford, Conn.), Sam DiBella (Danvers, Mass.), and Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) took advantage of two Curry errors to give their team a two-run cushion.

The Colonels closed the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to an RBI double by Mikayla Korona (Bellingham, Mass.) that plated Smigiel. But that was as close as Curry would come.

Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) suffered the loss to fall to 14-6.

GAME 2

In the second game, it was the visitors who scored first. Endicott took a 1-0, third-inning lead when Ilyza Holman (Ashland, Mass.) scored on an RBI hit from Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.). The Colonels went ahead 2-1 in the fifth thanks to back-to-back run-scoring singles by Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) and Bruno.

Endicott scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh, sending the game into the bottom of the seventh knotted at 2-2. Then LaRosa delivered the game-winning hit, a one-out single to center that scored Flaherty.

Jennifer Lundstrom got the win, tossing a complete game to improve to 5-7. She allowed five hits, three walks and one earned run, while striking out two over seven innings.
