Softball Splits a Doubleheader Against Visiting Non-Conference Foe Suffolk

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and Suffolk University split a doubleheader in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels captured the opener 4-1 before the Rams rebounded in the nightcap 11-2 in five innings. Curry is now 15-9 on the season while Suffolk stands at 7-17.

GAME 1

The Colonels got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first as a sacrifice fly by freshman Marissa Bruno (Milford, Conn.) scored senior Megan Flaherty (Medway, Mass.), and an RBI single from senior Kaitlyn Maderios (East Bridgewater, Mass.) plated sophomore Amy Nolan (Norfolk, Mass.).

Curry extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth thanks in part to a run-scoring single from senior Ariel LaRosa (Saugus, Mass.) that brought home Flaherty.

The Rams scored their only run in the opener in the top of the sixth courtesy of a solo home run from senior Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.).

Junior Taylor Ahearn (Salem, Mass.) went the distance to improve her record to 10-2. She allowed three hits, one walk, and one earned run while striking out four over seven innings. Junior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) took the loss, tossing six innings and surrendering seven hits, one walk and three earned runs. She fanned two.

GAME 2

In the nightcap, Suffolk exploded for five runs in both the third and fifth innings. McAndrews, freshman Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) and sophomore Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) each drove in a pair for the visitors.

The Colonels plated their two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run blast off the bat of LaRosa.

Freshman Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) picked up the win for the Rams, tossing five innings to improve to 3-6. She allowed eight hits, one walk and two earned runs. Freshman McKenna Barlow (Middletown, R.I.) was saddled with the loss after giving up four hits, two walks and two earned runs in her 3.1 innings of work.

Curry will travel to Nichols on Thursday for a CCC twin bill starting at 3 p.m. Suffolk visits Mount Ida on Friday for a pair of league games starting at 3 p.m.
