Softball Goes 1-1 in a Non-Conference Doubleheader at Salem State
SALEM, Mass. - The Curry College Softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Salem State. The Vikings took the opener, 11-6, while the Colonels captured the nightcap, 7-2. Salem State now stands with a record of 11-5 while Curry is 11-7.
The Vikings took advantage of timely hits and heads up baserunning to win the first game, 11-6. Senior shortstop Michelle Grifoni (Peabody, MA) and senior outfielder Sara Bergeron (Methuen, MA) would lead off the bottom of the first with two singles and would be brought around to score on an inside-the-park home run from junior second baseman Lauren Garchinsky (Saugus, MA) that would put the Vikings up 3-2.
Curry hit two triples, by sophomore outfielder Chelsey Munsey (Leominster, MA) and freshman first baseman Tiana Sturtze (Worcester, MA), to take a 6-2 lead in the top of the third inning.
The Vikings would respond in the bottom of the frame as junior pitcher Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, MA) would go deep with a two-run home run that scored freshman third baseman Jenn Toussaint (Reading, MA), who reached on a single to lead off the inning.
Bryan would not relinquish another run in the remainder of the game as Salem State scored three in the fifth and sixth innings to account for the 11-6 victory. Bryan pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out eight.
In the second game of the afternoon it was the Colonels who would not go quietly as they won 7-2. Curry would break open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning on a two-RBI single from junior catcher Mikaela Carney (N. Reading, MA) . The Vikings would tie the game up in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI triple for Grifoni.
The Colonels would take the lead in the fifth inning on three runs, including a Munsey single that scored two runs. They would add two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Curry was led in the second game by junior second baseman Amanda Felzmann (Bellingham, MA), who went three for four with two runs scored. They also received a solid pitching effort from Salem native Taylor Ahearn, who tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and two runs and striking out two.
Salem State will return to action on Thursday afternoon as they host a non-conference doubleheader against Plymouth State at 4:00 pm. Curry also plays on Thursday when they will play host to Maine-Farmington at 3:00 pm. (Recap courtesy of SSU Sports Information)
