Softball Sweeps Past Visiting Fitchburg State in Non-Conference Action

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College swept visiting Fitchburg State, 7-1 and 5-3, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels upped their record to 11-13, while the Falcons fell to 7-12.

In the opener, Fitchburg State took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to an RBI single by Karen Skoczylas that scored Alycia McGrail. But Curry went on to plate seven unanswered runs, including a two-run double by Amanda Peters in the bottom of the first. The Colonels tacked on four more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Mikaela Carney.

Peters went 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Taryn Vigeant went 3-for-3 and knocked in one run. The Falcons had six different batters collect one hit apiece. Janelle Mayo went the distance, striking out seven to improve to 3-6 on the season. Nicole Monroe (3-6) took the loss, surrendering six hits, six earned runs, and four walks while striking out three.

In the nightcap, Fitchburg again took a 1-0 lead after a half inning, as Monroe singled to right to bring home Skoczylas. The Colonels responded with two of their own in the bottom of the opening frame, including an RBI double by Amanda Felzmann that plated Megan Flaherty. Fitchburg went back on top in the second inning, as Meghan Jenkins and Jill Moses each had RBI hits. The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when the hosts scored three times. The big blow was a two-RBI double to center field by Flaherty.

Flaherty went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, while Heather Carrier went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jenkins and Monroe each collected a pair of hits and one RBI. Peters (2-3) was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete-game eight-hitter. Nancy Henry took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year after allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings.

Curry resumes conference play on Thursday, hosting New England College in a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader. Fitchburg State is back in league play on Saturday, traveling to MCLA for a pair of games starting at 1:00 p.m.
