Milton, MA - The Curry Men's Volleyball team began their first season in program history on Saturday, beating both Sarah Lawrence and Dean in four sets.
Match One vs Sarah Lawrence
The Colonels defeated the Sarah Lawrence Gryphens 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18.
In this match, it was all about Chris Milfort, who established a program record for kills in the inaugural match. He had 22 kills on 40 attempts. In comparison, a player has had 22+ kills in a match only six times in the Curry Women's Volleyball program history. But Milfort's .400 hitting percentage wasn't even the best on the team, as Michael Swanigan was at .421, collecting 11 kills on 19 attempts. He nearly recorded the first double-double in program history, as he led the team with nine digs. The Colonels as a team had 49 kills, on all but five of those Loden Broe had the assist, as he posted 44 set assists. Again, for comparison, 44+ set assists has only happened three times in the women's program. Milo Barry Young helped lock things down at the net, as he had six total blocks.
Match Two vs Dean
The Colonels took down the Bulldogs 22-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-15.
The turning point in this match came late in the second set. With Dean already up one set to none, they held a 24-22 lead in the set. Their coach called a timeout, which seemingly killed their momentum, as the Colonels would win five out of six points to steal the set. After a close third set that saw the Colonels grab a 2-1 lead, Curry coasted to a fourth set win to complete a 2-0 day.
It was a balanced attack in this match, as the Colonels had four different players record at least eight kills in James Schoenthaler (12), Jose Teixeira (10), Chris Milfort (9), and Michael Swanigan (8). Teixeira and Milfort each hit over .500 in the match. Once again it was Loden Broe in the middle of a majority of those, as he had 43 set assists. Leading the team in digs was Milfort with 10.
Up Next - The Colonels will look to keep things rolling when they travel to Elms next Friday.
