MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated 12-11 in overtime by Eastern Connecticut University in a non-conference collegiate men's lacrosse game Sunday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to an overall record of 0-4 on the young season.
Curry scored two goals in the first quarter, the first coming with 10:44 on the clock when Jed Cappuccino connected with Mac Kline to get the Colonels offense rolling. 45 seconds later, Donovan Mawhinney scored off a pass from Nicholas Cole for Curry's second of the quarter. Cole scored back-to-back goals halfway through the second to send the home team to the break trailing 7-4.
The third quarter was all Curry as the Colonels scored three times in the period. Cole earned the hat-trick with 6:04 remaining, assisted this time by Jack McCarthy. Mawhinney scored his second goal three minutes later with an assist from Sam Melia and Brody Dalzell scored off a pass from Cole late in the third, tying the game at 7-7 heading into the final quarter of regulation.
Despite an early goal from Kline, the Colonels found themselves in an 11-8 hole with just over a minute remaining in the fourth. Jed Cappuccino found Cole with 1:18 on the clock to give the Colonels hope, as the pair reconnected just 30 seconds later to cut the Warriors' lead to one. A faceoff win gave Curry a chance as Mawhinney passed to Dalzell who scored with just eight seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime. Despite a few promising possessions, Eastern Connecticut scored with five seconds left in the overtime period to steal the game from the Colonels.
CJ Veader played the entire game in net for Curry, making 13 saves in the loss.
The Colonels return to action on Tuesday, March 4th, hosting Salve Regina at 4 p.m.
