MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Curry College men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 10-9 overtime defeat to Salve Regina University Saturday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams at Gaudet Field.
With the loss, Curry opens its conference season 0-1 in league play, while moving to 3-6 overall.
Sophomore Connor Bryant (Methuen, Mass.) and graduate student Sam Nielsen (Fairfield, Conn.) scored first quarter goals for the Colonels, but the host Seahawks held a narrow 3-2 lead at the end of one.
The 3-2 first period score was reversed in quarter number two, with the Colonels outpacing Salve by the same margin to send the game to halftime tied at 5-5. Freshman Tim Sullivan (East Walpole, Mass.), junior Nick Perfetuo (Norwell, Mass.), and sophomore Stephen Stackhouse (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) scored the second quarter tallies for the visitors.
Sullivan completed the hat trick with Curry's only two goals of the third quarter, which sandwiched Salve Regina's lone strike of the period as Curry head to the fourth ahead 7-6.
After falling behind twice in the fourth, freshman Josh Hunter (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Perfetuo each scored equalizers in the final three minutes of regulation, forcing the game to overtime tied at 9-9.
The Seahawks needed just 53 seconds in overtime to net the gamewinner, as Brendan Treacy ended the game on his second goal of the evening.
Two Curry netminders split the net, with sophomore Evan Falandys (Leominster, Mass.) making five saves in the first half of action. Senior Bobby Cannan (Bernardsville, N.J.) played the second half and overtime, making nine saves.
Curry will be back in action on Thursday evening with a 7 p.m. faceoff against CCC foe Western New England University from Walter M. Katz Field.
