Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Wentworth in Conference Play

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team held off the Wentworth Institute of Technology, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. The Colonels improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCC while the Leopards slip to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league action. With three points in the win, Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.) eclipsed the 100-point mark.

Wentworth held a 4-2 advantage after one quarter of play. Junior Dane Hanson (East Providence, R.I.) netted the first goal of the contest off of an assist from Stebbins just 39 second in. The Leopards came back with two straight, one from senior Steven Russman (Troy, N.Y.) and the other from senior Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.). Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) broke up the mini run with an unassisted goal with 7:54 to go in the opening frame. The Leopards answered back with two more to close the quarter, the first from junior Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) and the second from Russman.

The Colonels controlled the offensive end of the field in the second quarter, shutting out Wentworth 5-0. The stanza featured four different goal scorers, including two from sophomore Nick Perfetuo (Norwell, Mass.) as Curry entered the halftime intermission with a 7-4 lead.

The teams were even in scoring in the third, each finding the back of the net twice. Zach Alexander (Franklin, Mass.) and freshman Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) registered tallies for Wentworth while DeLeary and Hanson found the back of the net for Curry. The Colonels entered the final quarter ahead by three, 9-6.

The Leopards made one final push in the fourth quarter, outscoring Curry 3-1. Junior Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) tallied the opening two markers for the visitors while freshman Pat Modoono (Billerica, Mass.) netted a man-up goal off an assist from DeLeary. Coakley had the final goal for Wentworth with 1:53 remaining and were unable to find the equalizer to force overtime.

Freshman Evan Falandys (Leominster, Mass.) was credited with the victory in the cage, making 14 saves. Junior Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) was tagged with the loss and registered 18 saves. Curry held a 41-36 edge in shots.

Curry travels to Roger Williams University for its next contest on Wednesday, March 31 starting at 7:00 p.m. Wentworth will return to action on Saturday, April 3 at home against Western New England University at noon.
