Men's Lacrosse Falls to Cadets in Opener

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Curry College men's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season with a 17-12 loss at Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field.

Junior Matthew Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.) started the game with a man-up goal to put the Colonels ahead 1-0, 2:29 into the contest. The Cadets followed with a 6-0 run which featured four different scorers. Scahill found the back of the net again with 55 ticks on the clock as the first quarter ended with a 6-2 score.

Norwich had the slight scoring advantage in second quarter, 5-4. Senior Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.) and sophomore Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) netted tallies 1:23 apart to build an 8-3 lead. The Colonels followed with two-straight of their own, one from Scahill to complete the hat trick and the other on a man-up opportunity from junior Samuel Nielsen (Fairfield, Conn.). The assist was awarded to senior Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.). The Cadets answered back with three in a row, one each from junior Payden Masarcchia (Enola, Pa.), junior Kevin Horchak (Mullica Hill, N.J.), and senior John Jennings (Riva, Md.). Senior Andrew DeLeary (Wakefield, Mass.) and Fallon deposited goals in the final four minutes of the frame. The Cadets entered the halftime intermission with an 11-6 edge.

Scahill got things started in the third with a goal to cut the deficit to four, 11-7. Campbell and Masarcchia each added unassisted markers to extend the lead to six (13-7). Fallon recorded his second of the day when he put a shot past junior Nick Kandra (Crofton, Md.). The helper was awarded to DeLeary. Senior Connor Bourque (Goffstown, N.H.) finished two consecutive shots to stretch the lead to seven. Fallon became the second Curry student-athlete to register a hat trick when he found the back of the net with one second left in the stanza.

Senior Russel Gilligan (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) added his third of the afternoon to begin the final quarter, which was set up by Masarcchia. The Colonels outscored the home squad 3-1 the rest of the way with goals coming from senior Jake Stebbins (Colchester, Vt.), Nielsen, and Fallon as the game ended in the 17-12 final.

Campbell finished with a game-high seven points on four goals and three helpers. Gilligan, Anazlone, and Masaracchia each recorded hat tricks. Three others had multiple-point efforts for the home squad. Kandra picked up the win in goal, converting 10 saves.

Fallon and Scahill paced Curry with four goals and one assist apiece. DeLeary and Nielsen also had multi-point performances. Sophomore goalie Bobby Cannan (Bernardsville, N.J.) was credited the loss while making one save. 

Curry (0-1 overall) plays host to Trinity College (Conn.) on Wednesday, March 4 at 5:00 p.m. Norwich (1-1 overall) remains home to play Plymouth State University on Tuesday, March 3 at 4:00 p.m.
