Men's Lacrosse Cruises to a 19-2 Win Over Anna Maria College in Season Home Opener

MILTON, Mass. In a non-conference match up in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon, Curry College defeated Anna Maria College, 19-2. With the win the Colonels improve to 1-0 on the season.  The AMcats fall to 0-1 overall.

Curry was led by sophomore Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) who had a career-high nine points on seven goals and two assists.  Freshman Deven Newell (Medford, Mass.) had an impressive day in his first collegiate game netting three goals and helping on five for eight points. 

The Colonels got goals from eight different scorers in their season opener.  Six freshman earned their first collegiate goals; Newell, MJ Urbano (Wakefield, Mass.), Tom Cashin (Boxford, Mass.), Wade Prajer (Southbury, Conn.), Ed Johnson (Woburn, Mass.) and Clay Sweitzer (Madison, Conn.).  Freshman Zachary White (Milford, Conn.) got two assists for his first points in his collegiate career.

Curry went on a 7-0 run in the first half before Anna Maria got on the board.  The Colonels wasted no time as they scored just seconds into the first period after winning the opening face-off.  They tallied three more in the period and netted another three to start the second stanza. The AMcats Daniel Rinkus tallied an unassisted goal but the Colonels answered back with four more before halftime to take a demanding 11-1 lead heading into break.  Serra scored four of his seven goals on the day while Newell netted two and dished out three assists.  Curry also earned two from Urbano and one from Cashin.  

The third period saw Curry outscore Anna Maria, 7-0 to extend their advantage to 18-1.  Those seven goals were off of seven different sticks.  Five were assisted while only two were unassisted.  Serra was first to strike off a pass from Newell.  Serra returned the favor after assisting Newell just minutes later.  Cashin netted his second, unassisted.  Junior Dominick Marcella (Hull, Mass.) scored off a feed from Serra, Prajer earned an unassisted tally, Newell dished one out to Johnson and White assisted on Sweitzer. 

Each team found the back of the net just once in the final 10 minutes of play.  The AMcats Zachary Bryant rolled the crease for an unassisted goal and with just 42 seconds showing on the clock, White got his second assist after sending a pass to Johnson for his second tally on the day. 

Freshman Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) picked up the win in net with 12 saves.  Schwarz earned the loss despite making an impressive 34 saves.

The Colonels led in ground balls at 45-22, earned 20-out of-23 face-offs and was 22-26 on clears.

Curry hosts Mitchell College on March 5 in a non-conference match-up at 1:00 p.m.
