MILTON, Mass. – Autumn is certainly in the air on the campus of Curry College, as the leaves are beginning to fall and the temperature is starting to drop. The activity around the Men's Lacrosse team, however, is about to reach its pinnacle as the Colonels prepare for the final days of the Fall Ball season. For the past four weeks the men have been hard at work, on and off the field, in preparation for this Sunday's tournament at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.
The build-up to this point has been a busy one. Head Coach Tim Murphy has praised this group for continuing to be productive in and out of their early-morning practices during the recent weeks. "We ask a lot of these young men, many of whom are new to college and to our program. Between practice, study hall, volunteer events, and other team activities, they have stayed focused and put in the work that we need to continue to get better as a team."
The Colonels spent part of this past weekend volunteering at two different fundraising events as part of the off-field activity that Coach Murphy referred to. On Saturday, the team lined the streets for the Casey's 5K Fun Run, a local road race in Norwood, Mass. This event benefits a young woman and her family, and helps bring awareness to traumatic brain injuries. The lacrosse team provided directions along the course for the runners and walkers, worked a water stop and cheered on all the participants in this wonderful event.
The next morning, the Colonels were up early again to help out at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in South Boston, Mass. This event is crucial in the effort to provide breast cancer treatment and research, as they strive to end this horrible disease. The men took on a wide variety of jobs, from set up and break down, to interacting with participants and providing critical health information to all who attended the event.

As for the on-field activity, the Colonels have had two "friendly" competitions in as many weeks. First, the current team hosted the Colonel Alumni in the annual Alumni Game on Katz Field. The alums had their largest showing of former Colonels, but could not hold off the young guns. Despite the result for the Curry grads, there were plenty of smiles to go around, as the future of the program continues to look bright.
The team then held its annual intrasquad scrimmage, in front of a number of excited prospective Colonels. The intensity was high, and it was evident that their hard work has been paying off. "Many young players were impressive, and our returners showed a lot of veteran savvy and leadership," said Murphy. "It's clear that they are ready to see a different color uniform."
They will get their chance this weekend when the Colonels step up a division to compete against a pair of Division II teams, American International College and St. Anselm College.
