Men's Lacrosse Downs UMass Boston, 12-6

MILTON, Mass. –Curry College defeated UMass Boston to 12-6, in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday in Milton, Mass.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 6-1 overall, while the Beacons fell to 1-2 overall.

Curry came out strong to start the game scoring the first goal just 37 seconds in off a goal by sophomore Connor Arnold (Clifton Park, N.Y).  UMass came back to tie the game when senior Eric Collins (Somerville, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal.  The Colonels took a three goal lead heading into the fourth when senior Russell Lanham (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.) netted the last to tallies of the frame.

Curry once again scored the first goal to begin the second quarter off another by Arnold.  The goal however didn’t come until midway through the second.  UMass scored the next two, 45 seconds apart from each other.  Senior Ryan Fitzgerald (Abington, Mass.) and freshman Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) scored the third and fourth goal for their team and cut the Colonels lead to just one.  Freshman John Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.) however scored his first on the day with less than two minutes to play in the half to head into break with a 5-3 Curry lead.

The Colonels scored seven goals to the Beacons three in the final 30 minutes, for the 12-6 victory.  Arnold scored three more to end the game with five goals total.  Natale also finished with five points on two goals and three assists.  Castellano scored one and assisted on three for four points on the day.  Lanham netted one more and also chipped in with an assist for three points.  Senior Sean Gallagher (Topsfield, Mass.) finished the day with two goals. 

For the Beacons, Delpha had three goals, and Collins had two.  Sophomore Domenic Fichera (Scituate, Mass.) chipped in for two assists. 

UMass held a slight advantage in shots with 36 and Curry 35.  The Colonels however picked up 35 groundballs and the Beacons 27.  Curry also went 14-21 on face-offs and UMass 7-14. 

Curry’s senior netminder, Michael Hibbard (Chelmsford, Mass.) played solid between the pipes earning his sixth win of the season making 16 stops.  Junior Tim McGonagle (Concord, Mass.) came in for Hibbard with 5:57 left to play and made one save.  Senior Anthony Fitti (Havertown, Pa.) made six saves in net for UMass in the loss. 

Curry will host Endicott College on Tuesday, March 28 at 7:00 pm. Umass Boston will travel to Clark University on Saturday, March 24 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.   ?
