           WORCESTER, MASS.
– The Clark University men’s lacrosse team came up just short of its first victory of the season with a tough 11-10 loss to Curry College in non-conference action at Granger Field on Thursday night.
Freshman Evan Hammersley (Lynnfield, Mass.) snapped a 10-10 tie with the game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Clark had a chance to send the game into overtime when sophomore Eugene Arsenault (South Portland, Maine) dumped a pass into the net, but time had already expired.
The Cougars (0-3) took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, but Curry scored three unanswered goals in the second to take a 4-3 lead into the break. Sophomore Danny Heelan (Avon, Conn.) and junior Chris Adams (Bradford, N.H.) each tallied their first goals of the season in the opening quarter.
After Hammersley extended the Colonels’ advantage (5-3) just 13 seconds into the third, freshman Chris Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) and Arsenault each scored man-up goals within a 2:49 span to knot the score (5-5) with 11:10 remaining. Freshman Phil Winslow (North Providence, R.I.) added an unassisted goal to make it 6-5 at 7:22.
Curry came back with a pair of goals to go up by one (7-6), before Johnson’s unassisted tally tied (7-7) the game for the fifth time. However, Russell Lanham (Silver Spring, Md.) scored consecutive goals to give the visitors a 9-7 lead and close out the quarter.
The game was decided in the fourth period. The teams traded goals early in the frame until Johnson broke through for his fourth goal of the night to cut the margin to 10-9. Following a couple of key saves by Curry goalie Gordon Holmes (Brookfield, Conn.), Arsenault pushed across the sixth and final game-tying goal to knot the score at 10-all with 2:54 left to play.
Hammersley then capitalized on a man-up opportunity with the go-ahead goal with 30 seconds on the clock.
Johnson led Clark with four goals, while Arsenault chipped in with three. Senior Shawn Roche (Centerport, N.Y.) dished out three assists.
Senior Tyler Campbell (Portland, Ore.) stopped 11 shots for Clark. Holmes recorded four saves in the win for Curry.
Clark will host Wentworth on Thursday (7 p.m.).
