Providence, RI – The Curry Men's Hockey team secured a come from behind victory on Saturday, beating Johnson & Wales 5-3. With the win, the Colonels are now 14-3-0 on the season, while the Wildcats move to 8-8-1. The Colonels sit atop the CNE at 8-2, while the Wildcats are 3-6-1.
Not wasting any time, the Colonels struck first just 100 seconds into the game, as Nolan McDonough put one past the goaltender. He was assisted by Eelis Laaksonen. But the Wildcats would respond with two goals, which held until the 18 minute mark of the first period when Blake Rothstein tied things up at two headed into the intermission.
Then halfway through the second period the Colonels would retake the lead, as Laaksonen scored a power play goal off an assist from Gage Dill. That duo would team up again for another power play goal eight minutes into the third period. Just 20 seconds after Laaksonen's second goal, Grady Friedman would score off an assist from Manny Cabral. The Wildcats would get one goal back with five minutes remaining in the game, but it was too little, too late, as the Colonels would coast to a 5-3 win.
It was a big game for Eelis Laaksonen. Along with his four points, the game marked his 100th career game, becoming only the 13th player to do that since the 1995-1996 season. He also now sits at 93 career points. He currently leads the Colonels with 12 goals on the season.
Shane Soderwall made 19 saves in the win.
Up Next – The two teams will faceoff again on Saturday at the Canton Ice House. That game will start at 3pm, and the Colonels will be celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the program.
