Men's Hockey Hosts East Coast Jumbos
January 16, 2025
The Curry Men's Hockey team hosted the East Coast Jumbos for their annual game last week, and it was a fun, fast-paced night to remember for both teams. The East Coast Jumbos is a non-profit working to provide a positive athletic and social experience for athletes with Autism and other developmental disabilities through the great sport of ice hockey. Colonels players say they look forward to skating with the Jumbos year after year.
Captain George Vonakis who has been a part of this event for each of the last four years, cherishes the night with his teammates. "Getting to skate with the Jumbos each year has been a big highlight for us as a team. The joy and passion each of the Jumbo's players have for the game of hockey is infectious and reminds up what an amazing game hockey is. Not only are they fun to play with and talented, but sharing the ice with the Jumbos makes our whole team appreciate what hockey has brought us in life."
The game, held this year at Canton Ice House, is a chance for players on both teams to exert some energy, have a few laughs and celebrate their shared love of the game.
"The East Coast Jumbos is an awesome opportunity we get to connect with players from different backgrounds." Said senior Jacob Crespo. "It means a lot to me with having a cousin who has down syndrome who loves hockey. It's awesome to be able to connect and play the game we love with them. Being able to get on the ice, laugh and enjoy playing with them was amazing. I hope more people get to experience and be apart of something like the East Coast Jumbos."
"This is the fourth straight year we have been able to do this, and we are so fortunate to be part of it." Colonels head coach Peter Roundy said. "We are thrilled that Coaches Paul, Kevin and Ray were able to get 25-30 players on the ice for a really competitive game. This is a great opportunity for our players to have some fun, bond as a team, give back to the game, and connect with a great group of people."
