BIDDEFORD, Maine - The #5 Curry College men's ice hockey team was defeated 3-2 by #13 University of New England Saturday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Harold Alfond Forum.

With the defeat, Curry moves to 16-4-1 overall and 12-4-1 in the CCC.

Curry opened the scoring with just under six minutes to play in the first period. In the waning seconds of a power play, sophomore Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) took a shot from the bottom of the right circle that was initially saved by the UNE netminder, but popped up in the air and fell down into the net for a 1-0 Colonel edge. Nick Favaro (Vaughan, Ontario) and Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) assisted on the goal.

The Nor'easters exploded for three goals in the second period to take a two-goal edge into the final 20 minutes.

The 3-1 scoreline nearly held for the balance of the contest, but Zhukov buried one with 13 seconds left in the third period to make things interesting, but the goal was too little, too late. The tally, assisted by Kevin Pitts (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) and Favaro, ended up being the final goal of the evening.

Curry netminder Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) took the loss between the pipes, turning aside 23 shots in the defeat.

Next up for the Colonels, they will return home on Friday night to take on Wentworth at the Canton Ice House. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
