Men's Ice Hockey Rallies Past Trinity

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team came back from three one-goal deficits to defeat Trinity College 4-3 in the semifinal of Norwich University's Northfield Savings Bank Tournament on Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.

With the win, Curry improves to 8-2-0 overall on the season, and advances to the final of the NSB Tournament at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Colonels will take on the winner of the SUNY Canton-Norwich contest.

Trinity opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, but freshman Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.) tied the score with 2:46 to play in the first to even the score at 1-1. His centering pass from the right wing deflected in off a Bantam defenseman for the tally, with assists going to George Vonakis (Abingdon, Md.) and Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H.).

In the second, Dill scored his second equalizer of the evening late in the second. Just 2:15 after Trinity had taken the lead, Dill ripped a shot into the top corner off a faceoff to tie the game at 2-2. Sophomore Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) was credited with an assist on the goal.

The Bantams took the lead with just under eight minutes to play in the third, but the Colonels again had an answer. Senior defenseman Nick Favaro (Vaughan, Ontario) went end to end before his centering pass banked in off a Bantam defender to tie the score with 4:36 remaining.

Just 26 seconds later, Curry took the lead for good when freshman Kevin Pitts (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) cleaned up a rebound and bury his fourth goal of the season and give the Colonels the thrilling victory.

Graduate student Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) turned aside 27 shots in 52:14 to earn his eighth victory of the season. Junior Roland Polasek (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) stopped all six shots he faced in clean up duty in the waning moments of the first period when Cooper had to temporarily exit the game after losing a skate blade.

At time of press, Norwich led SUNY Canton 2-0 early in the second period in the other semifinal.
