Men’s Ice Hockey Tops #7 UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Curry College men's ice hockey team knocked off #7 University of New England 3-2 Saturday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Harold Alfond Forum.

With the win, Curry moves to 4-1-0 overall on the season and 3-1-0 in the CCC.

Curry opened the scoring less than a minute into the contest on the third goal of the season from senior Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.). Kent took a face-off win from Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) and wristed a shot into the top corner of the net for a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds into the game.

Midway through the second, the Colonels stretched the lead to two on a power play goal by senior captain Nick Favaro (Vaughan, Ontario). Favaro took a feed from Austan Bellefeuille (Framingham, Mass.) at the left point before walking to the high slot and wristing a shot upstairs for his first goal of the season.

UNE cut the lead back down to 2-1 early in the third period, but with under seven minutes to play, sophomore Leevi Selänne (Coto de Caza, Calif.) notched his first goal of the season to put the Colonels back up by a pair. A strong forechecking effort by freshman Ben Biester (Danville, Calif.) produced a UNE turnover before Selänne hopped on the loose puck and buried it for the eventual game-winner.

The Nor'easters scored late to cut the deficit down to 3-2, but could get no closer as the Colonels held on for the road victory.

Graduate goaltender Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) had a strong showing between the pipes for Curry, stopping 31 shots to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Next up for Curry, they will travel to Western New England on Thursday evening for a 7:40 p.m. puck drop from Springfield's Olympia Arena.
