Colonels Down Leopards in CCC Opener

EVERETT, Mass. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference action in the 2022-23 season with a convincing 5-2 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on the road Friday evening.

With the victory, Curry continues its season with a record of 2-0-0.

The Colonels opened the scoring just 5:58 into the contest on a power-play strike from Tarek Paranica (Grand Forks, N.D.). Gage Dill (Estero, Fla.) and Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H.) were credited with the assists on the opening goal.

The Colonels marked their second goal of the evening with five minutes remaining in the first period. Curry's Gage Dill found the back of the net to push his side into a 2-0 lead with assists by Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) and Tyler Drummond (Baldwin, N.Y.). 

Under a minute later, Curry's Paranica found the back of the net on another power-play opportunity to put the Colonels up 3-0 on an Arty Koppass (Riga, Latvia) assist. 

The Colonels tallied their fourth goal in the first period with 3:08 remaining as junior forward George Vonakis (Abingdon, Md.) found the back of the net, assisted by Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) and Kevin Pitts (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) putting Curry up 4-0 heading into the first intermission.

Curry College junior forward Tao Ishizuka (Providence, R.I.) marked his first goal of the season and the Colonels' final goal of the evening quickly into the second period. Ishizuka needed only 15 seconds in the second period before tallying the fifth Colonel goal on the board. Curry's Nolan Dawson (Calgary, Alberta) and Nicolas Lariviere (Blainville, Quebec) were credited with the assists.

Graduate student Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) turned aside 29 of the 31 shots he faced to earn the first conference victory of the season for the Colonels.

Next up for the Colonels, they will continue CCC action on Saturday night as they host Wentworth at the Canton Ice House at 7 PM.
