Colonels Surge Past Bison in Conference Action

DUDLEY, Mass. - The Curry College Men's Ice Hockey Team defeated Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Nichols College 4-1 Friday evening on the road.

With the win, Curry improves to 13-6-2 overall this season and 11-5-1 in the CCC. With the loss at home, Nichols falls to 6-13-1 overall and 5-13 in the conference.

The Colonels saw three goals from freshman forward Eelis Laaksonen (Oulu, Finland). Laaksonen marked his first of the night 6:15 into the first period of play. Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) fed Laaksonen the puck to surge past the Bison defense to put the Colonels up 1-0. Curry would hold the one-point lead through the duration of the first period.

Laaksonen found the back of the net for the second time Friday evening hastily in the second period. Just 49 seconds in, Laaksonen found an opening in the framework, assisted by Mark Zhukov and Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ont.). Midway through the second period, Laaksonen completed the hat-trick. Two passes from in front of the Bison's net resulted in a shot screaming over Korbinian Lutz's right shoulder putting the visiting Colonels up 3-0.

Colonel's defenseman Nick Magill-Diaz solidified Curry's victory with a power-play goal assisted by Eetu Selanne (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Eelis Laaksonen halfway through the final period of play. Nichols got one goal on the board shortly after Magill-Diaz's. Conor Leonard from Justin Perron and Noah Poindexter finalized the contest at 4-1 in favor of the visiting Colonels.

Colonel's goaltender Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Sask.) tallied 26 saves in the win on the road.

The Colonels get back out on the ice Saturday as they host The University of New England at The Canton Ice House for more conference action. Puck drop is slated for 3 PM.
