Men's Ice Hockey Claims Curry College Tournament with Win Over UMass Boston

CANTON, Mass. - The Curry College men's ice hockey team overpowered UMass Boston by a final score of 5-3 Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Curry College Tournament at the Canton Ice House.

With the win, Curry advances to 2-0-0 on the young season.

UMass Boston notched the only tally of the first period on a Chris Peters score, but the second period saw Curry explode for four goals to take a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. Junior Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) evened the score on a power play goal for the Colonels 5:21 into the second. Curry took the lead just over five and a half minutes later when junior Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) scored the first of his two straight goal to make the score 2-1. The Colonels would stretch their lead to 4-2 in the final minute of the frame when freshman Eelis Laaksonen (Oulu, Finland) netted his first collegiate goal.

In the third, UMass Boston made things interesting when Bailey Conger found the back of the net at the 3:10 mark to make the score 4-3, but an insurance marker from defenseman Kalle Sundell (Helsinki, Finland) just 2:43 later would prove enough to hold off the Beacons.

Curry's Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Saskatchewan) turned in a strong outing for the Colonels for the second consecutive night, earning the victory with 22 saves on 25 shots.

After the contest, Cooper and Tarek Paranica (Grand Forks, N.D.) were both named to the All-Tournament Team, with Paranica earning the title of Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Curry will look to stay perfect when they return to the ice for a 7 p.m. puck drop next Saturday on the road at Western New England to kick off Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
