MILTON, Mass.- In a non-conference match-up in men's ice hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Max Ulin Rink, Curry College battled Manhattanville to a 3-3 overtime tie. The tie moves the Colonels to 1-7-2 overall and the Valiants to 6-4-1 on the season.
The Colonels were first to get on the board 6:04 into the first period. Manhattanville's freshman Matt Lippa (Richmond Hill, Ontario) was called for a trip giving Curry a power-play. The Colonels took advantage as they netted the score just nine seconds into the PP. Junior Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) one-timed the puck past the glove of freshman netminder Tyler Feaver (Whitby, Ontario). Vankleef got assists from senior Shane Harrington (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald (Cary, N.C.). The Valiants answered back with their own power-play tally at 10:46. The Colonels' sophomore Shane Tracy (Bow, N.H.) was in the box for 1:06 minutes for hooking before Manhattanville tied the game. Sophomore Charlie Ryde (Stockholm, Sweden) fired off a shot outside the crease over the shoulder of Curry's freshman goaltender Spencer Cookson (Sheffield, Mass.). Ryde was helped by sophomore Thimmy Garbenius (Nykvarn, Seden). The Colonels regained the lead with 2:51 left to play on another man-up advantage. Harrington sent one home 18 seconds after junior Phil Dinner (Dallas, Texas) was sent to the box for boarding. Junior Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Fitzgerald earned the assists. Shots were even after one period at eight apiece.
Manhattanville controlled the second frame outshooting Curry 16-8 while netting their second of the night. Sophomore Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill.) intercepted a pass in his team's defensive end at the blueline. Gaul skated with the puck all alone to the opposite end of the ice going one-on-one with Cookson. He shot the puck top shelf for the unassisted tying score at the 8:41 minute mark. Feaver turned away all eight shots he faced leaving the Colonels scoreless.
The third period saw 30 shots between the two teams with the Valiants holding a 17-13 advantage. The netminders were solid between the pipes with both allowing just one goal scored on them. Once again it was Curry who struck first for the go-ahead score. After another penalty on Manhattanville, this time on a bench minor for too many men on the ice, the Colonels capitalized on the extra man situation. Junior Sean Nelson (Brighton, Mich.) won the face-off in Curry's offensive zone. Freshman Mack Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba) collected the puck sending it to junior James Murphy (Malden, Mass.) who was open in front of the net. Murphy sent the puck low past the pads of Feaver. Manhattanville answered back less than four minutes later for the eventual goal that sent them into overtime. Freshman Eric Berglund (Sollentuna, Sweden) fed Lippa for a tough angle shot from the corner that got through Cookson for the tying score.
Neither team could find the back of the net for the final minutes of the third period or the extra minutes in overtime. Curry got off three shots in OT while Manhattanville reeled off two.
Curry was a perfect 3-3 on power plays while Manhattanville was 1-9. The Colonels finished with 32 shots and the Valiants a game-high 43 shots.
Cookson made an impressive 40 saves in net for the Colonels. Feaver had 29 stops in net for Manhattanville.
Curry returns to action on Saturday, December 12 when they host Cortland State in a 4:45 p.m. game start. Manhattanville is off now until January 2 when they travel to Trinity for a 4:00 p.m. game.
