Hockey Upended 5-0 at Nichols College

HARRISVILLE, R.I. –  Nichols College earned a 5-0 shutout win over Curry College Wednesday night in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action at Levy Rink.

Seniors Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) and Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio), along with junior Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Sean Swansen (Salem, N.H.), each recorded a goal and an assist as the Bison (14-3-2, 6-1-1 ECAC Northeast) won their third in a row and eighth in their last nine. Larson, meanwhile, blanked the Colonels (9-7-2, 2-4-1 ECAC Northeast) for the second time in his career en route to his seventh career shutout.

Junior Daniel Bufis (Linden, N.J.) opened the scoring at 3:48 when he collected Sposit's rebound and sent in his second of the season. Less than four minutes later, Shapiro took a pass from junior Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) at the top of the left circle and snuck a shot past sophomore Brett Sinclair (St. Catharines, Ontario)  for his fifth of the season to push the Nichols' lead to 2-0.

Late in the first period, the Bison capitalized on a 5-on-3 to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Butler fed Shapiro at the left point, and his shot was redirected by Butler for his team-leading 11th at 19:36. Nichols held a 12-10 lead in shots through 20 minutes of action.

Nichols extended its lead to 4-0 with its second PP marker of the contest at 17:51 of the second. Junior Francesco Posillico (Massapequa, N.Y.) corralled the puck along the right wing boards and slid a pass to Gularte at the point. The senior d-man took a wrister that was redirected by Swansen and past Sinclair for his ninth of the season.

The Bison tacked on one more in the third with the man advantage when Sposit potted his sixth of the season at 13:17. Gularte had his shot from the point blocked, and Swansen pounced on the puck and moved the puck quickly to Sposit at the right post.

The Bison were 3-for-8 on the power play as Curry finished the night with 14 penalties for a total of 80 minutes (three game misconducts, two 10-minute misconducts). Beasley and Gularte each finished with two apples.

Junior Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) stopped 27 shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season for Nichols.  Sinclair finished the evening with 33 saves to fall to 5-2-1 on the season for Curry.

The Bison travel to Boston to face Suffolk Saturday at 7 p.m. The Colonels play at Salve Regina Saturday at 2:30 p.m.  (Game Recap Courtesy of Nichols Sports Information)
