Hockey Falls at Nichols, 2-0, in Conference Opener

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - Sophomore Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) made 37 saves to record his third-career shutout as the Nichols College men's ice hockey team blanked Curry College 2-0 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action Saturday night at Levy Rink.

Junior Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) and sophomore Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) each scored for the Bison (2-0-0, 1-0-0 ECACNE), who were swept by the Colonels last season. Nichols is now 2-0-0 for the second-straight season.

The Bison killed off all seven Curry PP chances – including 1:18 of 5-on-3 action in the second period. Eleven of the Colonels 37 shots came with the man advantage while the Bison fired off 31 shots and were 1-for-3 with the extra attacker.

Freshman Mike Weaver (Wakefield, Mass.) had the Bison's best scoring chance in the first period when he collected a Curry turnover in its own end and let go off a shot from the slot that junior goalie Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) stop with his right pad.

In the second, Beasley nearly gave Nichols a 1-0 lead when he pounced on another Curry defensive zone turnover, but his shot was turned aside by Mohney. Later in the period, Butler made good on the Bison's second PP chance as he cashed in on a feed from Beasley. Junior Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) started the play with a blast from the left point that was knocked down in front. Beasley collected the rebound and fed Butler, who swiped the puck around Mohney's right pad and into the net for his team-leading third goal of the season.

Jackson doubled the Nichols lead 1:23 into the third period. Sophomore Steve Lecey (Cedarburg, Wis.) started the play with a breakout pass to classmate Daniel Bufis (Linden, N.J.), whose shot from the slot was stopped by Mohney. Jackson gathered the rebound and potted his first goal of the season and third-career marker.

Larson slammed the door on the Colonels from there. Nichols was outshot 30-19 over the final 40 minutes of play – including 13-6 in the third period – but Larson turned aside every shot. The defense in front of him blocked 27 shots, led by Shapire and senior captain Josh DeLoach (Clearwater, Fla.) with five apiece.

Mohney finished the evening with 29 saves. Three different Colonels – sophomores Ryan Gay (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.), and freshman Tyler Vankleef (Dundas, Ontario) – each recorded six shots.

The Bison return to action on Wednesday with an 8:109 p.m. home contest against Becker. Curry hosts Western New England Thursday at 6:40 p.m.
