Hockey Ties ECAC Northeast Rival Becker College 2-2 in Overtime
MILTON, Mass.- Curry College tied Becker College 2-2 in overtime, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday night in Milton, Mass. The Colonels hold a 0-2-2 overall record and 0-1-1 in the ECAC Northeast. The Hawks record stands at 2-2-2 and 1-0-2 in the ECAC Northeast.
Curry was the first to get on the board in the first period when junior captain Payden Benning (Estevan, SK) took advantage of a five on four situation after a Becker penalty. Benning shot the puck past junior goaltender Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, NY) from the blue line off assists from senior assistant captain Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, MA) and junior Christopher Atkinson (Sparta, NJ). Ten minutes later the Hawks tied the game when sophomore Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) scored his first goal of the night. Sophomore Don Kane (Staten Island, NY) and freshman Jarrod Clark (Moorestown, NJ) were credited with the assists.
Benning scored his second goal of the night midway through the second frame when he collected a loose puck in front of the net. Despite Becker outshooting Curry 12-10 in the period they were unable to score.
The Hawks capitalized on a power-play at the 7:47 minute mark in the third period to tie the game at two apiece. Parkhouse scored his second of the night for the tying goal. Sophomore James Gordon (Belchertown, MA) and Kane got the assists. With six minutes left in the game Becker had an opportunity to earn the victory when two Curry players got penalties simultaneously. The Hawks had the five on three advantage but a solid penalty kill by the Colonels kept the game tied at two and sent the teams into overtime.
Both squads had ample scoring opportunities in overtime but neither team could score the game winner.
The Colonels finished with a total of 46 shots while Becker finished with 34. Both teams went 1-4 on power plays.
Sophomore goaltender Travis Owens (Burbank, CA) got his first collegiate start in net and made 32 saves. Becker’s Rosenthal made 44 total saves in the tie.
Curry's next game is on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:35 p.m. at Tufts University. Becker College travels to Castleton State on Saturday, November 27 for a 6:00 p.m. game start.
