Hockey Advances to ECAC Northeast Championship Game With 5-1 Victory Over Becker
MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Becker College 5-1, in men's ice hockey action on Wednesday night in Milton, Mass. in the ECAC Northeast semi-final game. The Colonels improve to 15-8-3 overall, while the Hawks fall to 11-13-3 overall.
The Colonels scored late in the first period on a goal by sophomore George Isham (Lake Bluff, IL) to take an early lead. Isham was assisted by freshmen Philip Arnone (Litchfield, NH) and Mike Lopez (Newton, MA). Curry outshot Becker 21-12.
The Colonels scored two more goals in the second frame to hold a 3-0 lead. Freshman Josh Pineiro (Burbank, CA) scored at the 3:36 minute mark when he received passes from Arnone and Lopez and took a slap shot that sailed past junior goaltender Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, NY). Just under a minute later sophomore Casey Brugman (Winthrop, MA) scored his first of the night on assists from Mike Curran (Arlington, MA) and senior Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, MA). Solid play in net from sophomore goaltender Robert Dawson (Woodbury, MN) kept the Hawks scoreless through the second period.
Becker scored their first and only goal of the game in the final period at 14:41. Sophomore Mark Lotito (Staten Island, NY) denied Dawson a shutout when he scored off a rebound in front of the net. Sophomore Cole Bell (Davenport, IA) was credited with the assist. The Colonels answered back with two more of their own both under three minutes to play. Junior Steve Mohler scored an unassisted goal (Yorba Linda, CA) and Pineiro scored his second of the night on an empty net goal from an assist by junior Mike Kavanagh (Little, NY.)
Curry had 51 total shots and Becker 33.
Dawson earned the win in net for the Colonels making 32 saves. Rosenthal made 46 saves for Becker in the loss.
Curry's next game is at home on March 5 at 4:35 p.m. in the ECAC Northeast Championship game. The Colonels will play the #2 seed Wentworth who defeated the #3 seed Johnson & Wales University in the other ECAC Northeast semi-final game.
