PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Freshman Michael Lopez (Newton, Mass.) tallied four points for Curry College, which erupted for six goals in the second period to defeat Salve Regina University 8-1 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast men’s ice hockey Saturday night at Portsmouth Abbey Arena.

Senior Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) Juniors Ryan Barlock (Niles, Ill.) and Christopher Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.), along with sophomore Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.) and freshman Brad Devereaux (Duxbury, Mass.), each racked up two points for Curry.

Leading 1-0 after one period on Devereaux’s second goal of the season, the Colonels scored six goals in a span of 11:48 in the second to grab a 7-0 lead. Brugman saw his shot deflect in off an SRU defenseman’s stick at 7:32 to make it 2-0, and Curran’s second of the season at 13:04 made it 3-0. Less than two minutes later, Atkinson took a pass from freshman Joshua Pineiro (Burbank, Calif.) and broke in alone on SRU freshman goalie J.C. Turgeon (Sherbrooke, Quebec) , beating him with a backhand shot to make it 4-0. Junior Payden Benning (Estevan, Saskatchewan) 13th of the season at 16:23 made it 5-0, and goals by Lopez at 18:40 and Warsofsky at 19:20 gave Curry a 7-0 lead through 40 minutes.

In the third, Atkinson’s second of the night and 10th of the season made it 8-0. Salve Regina senior defenseman Kevin Sullivan (North Branford, Conn.) knocked home his second of the season with under a minute remaining in regulation to spoil Curry sophomore goalie Robert Dawson (Woodbury, Minn.) shutout bid. Seniors Bryan Russell (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Billy Sabia (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked up assists on the goal.

Dawson made 20 saves to improve to 5-6-1 for Curry while Turgeon made 23 saves to fall to 0-8-0. The two teams combined for 64 penalty minutes, and each team converted once with the man advantage.

Prior to the game, the Seahawks honored 10 seniors who were playing the final home game of their careers. Salve Regina also played the majority of the game without senior and leading-scorer Brett Pimental, who suffered an injury early in the game and did not return.

The Seahawks (2-18-1, 1-10-0 ECAC) return to action on Monday when they travel to Boston for a 7 p.m. contest at Suffolk. The Colonels return to ‘The Ocean State’ on Thursday to face Johnson & Wales at 7:55 p.m.
